These vintage Skat playing cards were produced in the 1930s by the Vereinigte Altenburger und Stralsunder Spielkartenfabriken (VASS) in Altenburg, Germany. The long-established Altenburg card production is known for its clear graphic design, reliable printing quality and its important role in the tradition of German playing cards.
The Bavarian double-figure pattern (Bayerisches Doppelbild) is one of the classic regional German card designs and was especially popular in southern Germany. Together with the historic “Deutsches Reich” tax stamp, the deck can be clearly dated to the interwar period.
A particularly charming feature is the reverse design with AEG meter advertising (“AEG Zähler”), making this deck not only a playable Skat game but also a small piece of German industrial and advertising history.
