An impressive historical document from 1915: This German War Playing Card No. 194 was issued during the German Empire in the midst of the First World War and ranks among the most striking patriotic playing card series of its era.

Designed by Fritz von Lindenau and produced by Vereinigte Stralsunder Spielkarten-Fabriken AG (Altenburg division), the deck combines political iconography, early 20th-century print craftsmanship, and historical authenticity.

The original tax stamp “Deutsches Reich No. 90 – Dreißig Pf.” (1903–1919) on the Ace of Hearts confirms its period classification. Particularly noteworthy is the rare advertising back “Yenidze – Salem Aleikum / Orient Tobacco, Hugo Zietz Dresden,” a sought-after variant within this series.

Historical Context

The 1915 edition was issued in support of the “Luftfahrerdank Berlin-Charlottenburg” and reflects the propagandistic visual language of the wartime years.

Court cards display German state coats of arms (Prussia, Saxony, Bavaria, Württemberg) as well as portraits of Emperor Wilhelm II, Crown Prince Wilhelm, Crown Prince Rupprecht, and Duke Albrecht.

The number cards depict specific wartime events, each accompanied by explanatory captions along the lower margin.

The Acorn Ten features the order “Pour le Mérite,” while the Acorn Nine shows the Iron Cross — two of the most prestigious decorations of the German Empire.
