This rare 32-card Skat deck was produced by the renowned playing card manufacturer Ludwig & Schmidt in Halle an der Saale, circa 1903–1912.
It is an authentic Imperial German Skat deck featuring the traditional German-suited preußisches Doppelbild, distinguished by fine lithography, rich coloration, and a strong historical presence.
The Heart Ace bears the original Imperial tax stamp “Deutsches Reich.” These revenue stamps were used between 1903 and 1919 and provide a reliable dating reference.
As the cards are already marked “vorm. Ludwig & Schmidt,” the set clearly predates 1912 and belongs to the 1900s period.
Card Design:
The German-suited deck shows the preußisches Doppelbild, one of the most traditional and aesthetically refined designs of the Imperial era.
Number cards (6–10) depict German castles and cities, including Burg Hohenzollern, Magdeburg Cathedral, and Wartburg Castle.
These detailed illustrations are characteristic of early 1900s print culture and make the deck an important historical document of its time.
