This rare playing card deck originates from the historic playing-card town of Altenburg and was produced by the Vereinigte Stralsunder Spielkarten-Fabriken A.G., Altenburg division (VSS). It is a “Superfine Schwerdter” deck printed in the traditional Saxon pattern.
Production: approx. 1898 (late German Empire period)
Tax stamp: German Reich tax stamp No. 90 (2 Mark), used only 1919–1923 → this indicates that the deck was printed around 1900 and taxed later, around 1920
32 cards, single-figure design with traditional German suits
Card size: approx. 59 × 98 mm
Card backs: classic cornflower pattern
The Jack cards feature advertising: “Salem Gold Cigarettes – Something for You”
High-quality lithographic printing, detailed and richly colored
Time-typical preserved condition that retains the historic character
Eichholz King, Heart King and Heart Jack show minor age-related surface wear; the Ten of Leaves has a subtle central crease (see photo 10)
Overall, considering the age-related details, the deck remains in remarkably good condition
The cards are delivered in a neutral white cardboard sleeve for protection and presentation
An authentic and decorative piece of playing-card history from Altenburg – a highlight for collectors of antique playing cards, for enthusiasts of historical printmaking, or as a cultural artifact from around 1900.

The deck has been carefully inspected, properly stored, and is offered in the condition described above.
